Why Weight is simply a VANITY METRIC

Eat some Carbs, Digestible Fat and Cholesterol it’s OK

Here is some interesting information I have been churning around for years but have never been able to put togheter til now.
Weight loss myths, glycogen stores and low carb diets. This is something I have been preaching for years ~ “That we do not vilify carbs! We just eat good ones”. Oh, I mean good for you carbs.

Note here that digestive fat is not you enemy either.  WHAT? Carbs and Fat not my enemy?  Yes.  Read on.

If you dig into the facts, what weight really comes off during that first week or two of a low carb diet is not so impressive is it?  Well because weight is a vanity metric.  It is way down the list of healthier living metrics as far as I am concerned.  Low carb diets are just not thee answer long term ………..Please Christopher do tell!

Well, when you cut the carbs out of your diet, your body empties out the “emergency” stores of the carbohydrate it keeps in the liver and muscles in the form of a substance called glycogen. Glycogen is a normal part of our metabolism and allows us to do energy-intensive things like sprinting and jogging, Yates bent over rows (best single exercise in the gym), and explosive activities by letting us draw on the carbs stored in our muscles for energy. These are chains of glucose, Master Sugar if you will.  The big daddy of all sugars as far as an energy source is concerned.

Moreover, the glycogen stored in our liver allows us to keep our melon functioning. Makes us smarter, happier you know.  The normal person, someone eating a regular well balanced diet, needs 100-120 gr of glucose a day merely to supply the brain’s basic needs (unless you are like me and have to account for the extraordinary brain function).

If the body can’t get glucose from the dietary sugar and carbohydrate ingested, it has two choices: consume glycogen (the stored carbohydrate in the liver in this instance), or convert another digestive substance for energy.  But what if there is no dietary carbohydrates to munch on?  

In low/no carb environments we create with Atkins etc. the source the body will go to for energy is the muscle.  Oh shit.  Aren’t we trying to BUILD muscle not feed it to the body?  Aye Aye Captain! To make it more clear for the lay person, the body converts protein into energy using a lengthy process called “gluconeogenesis” which takes place in the liver. Simply Illustrated here: 8^)

Because we “Leanergetics”, and the body, want to avoid using its/our own muscle fibers for fuel, it does what it/we can to keep that liver glycogen store filled up.

So now what you selling some supplements Christopher? You know me better than that.

Now let’s move to Dog analogies. I do base my internet celebrity on comparisons of dogs to humans. This in mind, I submit the following argument.  George Hicox, an extraordinary dog trainer (the psychology), nutritionist (it’s the food stupid), and health practitioner (injury prevention~endurance), wrote in a 2003 article which has stuck with me over the years.

“Fat is the most critical nutrition as digestible fat is the only easy way to increase caloric energy (I believe because we have a maximum of volume we can intake). Performance dogs (Leanergetix Master’s Program in humans) will STORE up to 50% of their energy requirements. In fact the more fat is put into the bloodstream there is more available to use. Studies now show that even an off-season dog (or sedentary human) will benefit from a high-fat high-protein balanced diet” (The Program).

George peaked my curiosity with the Glycogen replacement mantra almost 10 years ago, and I have wanted to create a Glycogen ingest-able for humans ever since.  If gun dogs like Annie (Yoked) and Ruben (not so much), eat, sprint, and sleep (recover), to get in great shape, then why won’t a high fat, high protein, well balanced diet, work for us?  ——    if followed precisely it can.

Please note – this is for extremely active people performing sprints and high intensity resistance training not for people doing what Rueben and Annie are doing here.  For that kind of weight loss we have Leanergetix “The Program” for more sedentary dogs.

It does work. We Leanergetics know it works….ask anyone.  Can I ask my mother, can I tell that I love her……….can I call her now?(Quote: F-Fletch)

We know this to be true through experience with many subjects on the Leanergetix Master’s Program and though much of my own self experimentation.  You do not want to live me, no seriously.

Nutritional research that shows that a typical 150 lb man holds about three quarters of a pound of glycogen. But what most people don’t know is that each molecule of glycogen is bound to four molecules of water. (well come to think of it most people do not know that a man holds any Glycogen).

Water has weight too, a lot of weight. This means that when your liver and muscles are charged up with glycogen it adds an additional four or five pounds or more to your body weight.  Being that I am the Jerry McGuire of health coaches, this kid keeps asking me random questions.  “@Lentilchef, do you know how much a pound of water weighs?”Still of Renée Zellweger and Jonathan Lipnicki in Jerry Maguire
“No Ray. How much?”  8.36 pounds slightly less than the human head!”  Thanks Ray.

Those first few pounds on a low/no carb diet get you motivated to continue your diet.  I am all for that.  But if not followed by an exit strategy of maintenance, that weight returns swiftly and abandon rates on long term adherence to a sustainable nutritional plan skyrocket.  Digression ensues.  But hilarity does not.

This is what happens after the medically supervised HCG diet. I had early success on this diet and if followed precisely it has tremendous benefits.  However, I now contend with the three week maintenance period of no sugar/no starch required after, why not just do the “Better than HCG diet” which is Leanergetix to the core.  No Sugar or Starch for three weeks and you are no worse for the wear.  You can loose a lb. a day on doing this, but it is still not the whole truth about body composition.

When you start a very low carb diet you cut off the body’s supply of dietary carbohydrate and this leads to a rapid emptying of these liver and muscle glycogen stores. And when you lose that glycogen, you also lose the associated water; not to mention stamina and endurance in a big way sweety cakes.  That’s the reason why, during the first couple days of a low carb diet, you lose weight so dramatically. It’s also why you may feel slimmer and lose “inches.” You haven’t lost fat. You’ve simply dumped the water out of your muscles,and most alarmingly, your liver and your heart. This is why I insist that our participants measure body fat content and measure it as they go along.  It tells the story more precisely about body composition.  But weight is the vanity value.  As you know, Leanergetix is about rich life and goes beyond vanity.  We need to know, are we losing fat and gaining muscle? Yes…..awesome.

But what happens when you go off the diet for one day like during the Leanergetix Swedish Saturday? If you eat a significant amount of carbs, your liver and muscles grab glucose from your bloodstream to replenish your emergency supply of glycogen . As they do this, four molecules of water join each molecule of glycogen and, as fast as you can say, “For f(*ks sakes @Lentilchef I gained 8 lbs. on Saturday”!) The pounds you lost all week stack up on your all ready distended boiler like canned hams.  Be not discouraged and stop the weighing thing already, get your body ft measured.

So does it take a boatload of carbs to replenish your Glycogen?  I think not.  Lyle McDonald’s book, The Ketogenic Diet, and in the cyclical Ketogenic Diet, the author assumes that three quarters of a pound of glycogen that a 150 lb. person stores in his body only equates to about 70 grams of carbohydrate.  That, plus the Glycogen stored in the muscles added to it, you simply have to Eat that half a bag of white chips you love so much and you have arrived.  Plenty of carbs loaded for the next week.  You are replenished.

So if you cut your carbs or eat slow carbs (as recommended by yours truly, also in BFL, 4 Hour body, Slow CarbDiet ), you eliminate the blood sugar swings that cause hunger in most people and dips in your energy levels later in the day. The cravings you used to get when dieting may fade out in as little as two weeks (when I figure out the psychological cravings I will put my peanut butter down). When you stop eating in response to those nasty hunger cravings, you will find it much easier to eat a whole lot less than you used to. It is the drop in calorie intake that follows this drop in hunger that that results in the very real and often dramatic weight loss so many long-term low carbers report.

Will you gain it all back when you go off the diet? I’m hear to report; you will, and then some.

If you go off plan for a day, gain a few pounds of water weight don’t panic when you step on the scale. That instant 3 to 8 pounds you gained is only water.  how bout not ever weighing on Sunday why not just weigh on Saturday mornings.  Then eat a high fat, high protein, high fiber breakfast going into the rest of your Swedish Saturday and maybe even perform a high intensity resistance training sessions.  Your off to the races.

Conclusion.  Let’s get on a sustained program that increases energy and promotes real fat loss while adding to our muscle composition. Is this possible?  HELLO.  See Greatist for more tips

We do not have  problem with digestive fat on our Programs especially if your active, so go out and have a little peanut butter and rendered Kobe beef fat (Snake River Farms) drizzled over your Breyer’s no sugar added Ice Cream, and have a wonderful fat losing~learning experience.
Throw some toasted Macadamia nuts on there for good measure why don’t you, and remember this program is simple, and its here to stay.

Hockey…Fly Fishing…Weight Loss: 3 Lessons on ACTION

1) Hockey

I was blessed this weekend with the opportunity to play hockey in McCall, ID inside what is arguably one of the most spectacular barns around, Manchester Ice center! As usual I was the least skilled player on all rosters, but this time not necessarily the least fit. Not by a long shot (sorry guys).

What else is awesome is that I was able to play with a couple of recently retired NHL Players and a few others that could have been in “The Show” if things would have played out a little differently.  It is more than surreal.

Over 70 years playing hockey, he is more than an inspiration, he is a legend!

Now what is most exciting for me is that the four pairs of steel that rode the ice this weekend are actually participants in “The Program”.  All of which turned heads with their newly earned energy and leaner physiques (Leanergetix eh!).  As a matter of fact many memorable comments were made like the following ones which one overhears in the locker room:

“Claunch used to look like John Kruk on ice, but now being leaner he just looks like Will Ferrell out there!”

If I had a dollar for every person that says I remind them of Will Ferrell

And my favorite:
“I was taking notes out there on Ron‘s game and I had to stop cause I ran out of pages!”

I could go on all day.

Now I say all of that because my friend Ron was spectacular this weekend putting 5 in the basket in our first game.  What is cool is that he didn’t pursue professional hockey.  No he chose to follow his passions in life.
Moreover, what I think is important  here is that he knew what he wanted to in life and against conventional wisdom, he took subsequent action and did it until it was unsustainable. 
Although he didn’t end up working in his first passion forever, he worked on and eventually was faced with another crossroads later in life.  Once again he took the tough road.  He chose to go after his passion.  He took action!

Today he is the Best Realtor in the world right here in Boise, Idaho.  (and he still plays hockey with The Greatest Hockey Club on ICE too!)

2) Fly Fishing

Now you’re probably thinking, where is this jackass going with this?  What does this have to do with fly fishing or weight loss?  Keep your pants on cha cha, I will get there.

The Bone and I fly fish quite often when the weather is right like this beautiful November day on Silver Creek (42 Degrees, Sunny).  As you can see she is stalking the elusive Idaho Native BrownBow.  Now fly fishing Silver Creek is quite challenging.  The fish are wary, the water is crystal clear, and they are getting rattlin spoons thrown at them almost all year long.  That being said you have to approach getting these fish to rise to your fly with a skillful strategy.  Often times we are subjected to using small tippets and two flys (which never tangle).  Please see professional fly fishing diagram I drew up to help my nieces and nephews.

So we fish with an emerger and a dropper.  The dropper sinks a little behind the dry fly and the dry fly moves or drops abruptly when and fish strikes.  That being said, the bites are sometimes very subtle.  So I gently and lovingly advised The Bone to raise her rod tip if she even had a sneaking suspicion that the fly moved or sunk. She dutifully responded with big fish.  And then her hooking percentage improved dramatically.

Truth be told, The Bone does get all Brad Pitt on me occasionally and I find her shawdow casting on the banks of the MALAD in Hagerman, ID.

As we talked about the experience several times over the last couple of weeks we revisited this experience as the “why not lift the rod tip (take action), if you don’t you will not catch a fish for sure. But if you try it, you just might!”  So what have you lost if just take action?  Nothing.  Pretty good risk/reward profile eh?

3) Losing Weight:

You are now thinking OMG, more?  Anyone ever tell you the horse is dead? Well the answer is yes, but I really enjoy hearing myself talk.

When I was 290 lbs. there were two doctors that mentioned to me with candor (and I paraphrase), “YOU ARE GOING TO DIE, maybe not tomorrow, maybe not 5 years from now, but if you don’t take action, you will die.”

As I thought about making a life change, I thought, “what do I have to lose if I give it a whirl?  Maybe some time, a little discomfort, a few less chocolate covered peanuts?”Additionally I thought to myself over and over, “How do I feel after I eat whether it is fish and chips or if I eat a Chicken and arugula salad?” FULL that is how I feel. (Full without the guilt on the later)

Nutshell; I almost gave up the life I had today for a few seconds of pleasing comfort food and a few refreshing beers each day.

What should I do, “Take action and learn about nutrition delivery and timing and reinvent my diet, or do nothing and blow up like a June bug!” Now that is a pretty easy risk equation isn’t it? I took action. I studied for years on nutrient delivery and timing and created The Program.

Red Skies and Pizza Pies

Ok here we go, we are moving to what would be called the True Master’s Program (not ProgramPlus).  The previous Program we were slightly ketegentic and having have completed this has prepared your body for actual ketosis. However in both cases we carb cycle out with Swedish Saturdays, and in both cases we use the GOOD,BETTER, BEST (GBB) approach.  The difference is stricter adherence to calorie restriction and tracking of intake, yields more flexible eating on the weekend.  What does that mean for us?  How about carb night on Fridays now too!!!!!  WOOOHOOOO – sticking the theme of more digestive fat, why not eat a little pizza and let’s shed a little more body fat!  Stay tuned.

I was Beyond Hope Last Night!

I really was.  I went on an impromptu trip to the Northern Idaho – I received a call Wednesday proposing an adventure to North Idaho. After that phone conversation with a remarkable friend, I found myself at the crossroads in Hope, ID 400 miles from home.

I finally made it to my newly adopted second home, to my ultimate destination. It should be noted, I made a right turn at this sign and not a left.  Why?

Not long ago, I was in fact myself, beyond hope (I thought).  Think about this word: hopeless (without hope).  I had talked myself into the fact there was nothing I could do to change things.  Sad isn’t it?

This sign moved me to reminisce of my not so happy days.  I was a bit broken, a lot heavier, and I lacked energy and drive.  Life sucked pretty bad. 

Things have changed, haven’t they?  Yes they have, dramatically.

How? Just a little decision and subsequent action. A small behavior change or two has brought me to the place I am today! WOW.  Small changes can make a profound impact on were you are today, and most certainly where you end up.

One day while laying around feeling a smidgen of self-pity,  I just thought if I can just start eating right, take care of my body, and do a little more exercise each day, I can see myself in control of my life again (hope).  I know this is cliche’ but I have not turned back since.

Many people when moving at the speed of life these days, can feel overwhelmed by many things. They do not want to think about health and wellness.  They do not have time to prepare meals.  They don’t know what to eat nor when to eat it. Exercise or focus on diet; what should I do they ask.  These unfortunate people just have no hope in this part of their lives.  They default to the simple, the quick, and the convenient.  This can be devastating.  It also can be quite sad.

I am here to report it does not have to be this way.  The only call to action here I am suggesting is, to make a little change for the better and your life.  It will get better, a whole lot better.  If you are beyond hope just give it whirl and let me know how things improve.

This is a climb I could not have made 2 years before, and notice no sweat on my hat like there is on my buddy’s. Oh, and a similar climb slightly before two years ago sent me to the doctor for an EKG, a stress test,and a couple simple changes.  What do you think?

Chixs are for Kids

People ask me all of the time, will children eat the meals you prepare for the Leanergetic lifestyle?  Indeed they will. As a matter of fact they eat it up!

If you have to say “no pun intended” it wasn’t all that clever in the first place (CHICKPEAS).

Digression ensues; back to the point.  If you make it they will come.  My sweet little niece Abigale loves our Leanergetix meals and snacks!  Granted she is 3 so she likes her treats too! I took a photo of this plate of lemon cordon blue, sauteed’ mini bellos, broccoli chips, and CHICKPEAS because we knew she would like it!

She didn’t just like it she said she loved it!  If you don’t believe me,  just ask me.

She ate every bite and enthusiastically showed me the final product.

Nuff said

Not that a 3-year-old needs a program or  personal trainer, however it is a great foundation for functional active living later in life.  All they need is their own body weight and some space.  We do not feed Abby the program every meal. We simply put most of the items on her plate, possibly a few others when we are having a family meal together.  She usually gravitates towards the healthy whole foods. She is no dummy.  Believe it or not she had a shrimp appetizer, she asked for it, it was in the ice box……what a supper.

As I continue to cross weak excuses off my own list of why I can’t do the program, i.e.; “I have 2 small children and I only have time to cook one meal”, seeing the previous example of Abby, it kind of throws some excuses out the window, doesn’t it?  I think I may write a book of top 100 reasons I can’t change my eating habits?  What do you think?  (For all you readers I have offended it couldn’t hurt to try – email me at and I will shoot you the recipe).

Getting Lean and Fishing Silver Creek

This is an inspirational saying for only some people.  As a matter of fact many struggle with it especially when they are facing big challenges or trying times. We often fabricate worrisome outcomes in our minds and convince ourselves why we can’t do something.  So we just stop trying, or never start in the first place.  This is why many start ups, life changes, or diets often fail. People do not believe they can start exactly where they are today with exactly what they have today.  Things seem impossible, overwhelming, or  too complex to learn. Well when I first heard of hypothalamic obesity and insulin sensitivity, it sounded like Chinese to me.  I just didn’t think I could get my head around it. Today I am leaner than I have ever been, and I am doing things I never thought I would do.

I think of Earnest Hemingway and Bud Purdy every time I fish (what is arguably the best spring creek fishery in the world), Silver Creek.  Since I have learned to deliver the right nutrients to my body and mind, time it properly, I have become much improved in many areas of my life.  Areas like hockey and cooking. Most recently, I have become a skilled fly fisherman (still just a fly rod owner by Silver Creek’s terms).

If I would have given up after the first 15 years that I fished Silver Creek, I would never have seen moon rises like this!  Definitely wouldn’t have been around to winter fish with the mama and baby moose.

My energy levels are through the roof and my mind is so crisp lately that I am able to explore and try more things and different approaches to activities.  Way more than I ever would have in the past. Most times I wouldn’t even get started because I would just convince myself that I couldn’t do some things.

Not to jump all over the map, but it is my nature.

This another quote that is from a movie that has stuck with me for many years – I think it applies to this post.

As many of you know I am the perennial optimist.  Without this optimism I would have not experienced so many of the EPIC days in my life for which I am so grateful. And if I do not know what to do, I just DO something.  Some things good, some better. And now, I do some things best.  Further, if I add look for guidance and support, I do it right the first time. Then I simply gain momentum and leverage that momentum to my advantage.  That is exactly how I got to where I am today.  I just started moving toward my goal of a healthy, functional, active life and I find myself there today.  Can I improve, I believe I can, I know deep down in my know-er, I will!

It is my wish that through prompting and teaching people how I have become “Leanergetic”, they can and will come to achieve their own hopes dreams for active functional living.  I digress again.

I finally landed a big one at Silver Creek in Idaho by not giving up hope! Many thanks to Chase and the rest of the team at Lost River Outfitters for answering my completely annoying questions, and listening to my skillfully embellished fishing tales over the years.  I am still going to catch a huge Cutbrown one day!
